The Autocrats’ Accomplice

We cannot reverse the worldwide surge of authoritarianism unless we rein in its accomplice, kleptocracy. Increasingly, the destruction of democracy, the repression of civil liberties, the plundering of public wealth, and the international laundering of this loot are intertwined in what amounts to a death embrace for freedom and the rule of law. While the West’s liberal democracies now account for less than half of the global economy,48 they remain the principal financial and cultural destinations for ill-gotten wealth. This gives these democracies enormous leverage. They must use it.

This is a question of survival, not just morality. Kleptocracy is a cancer that is eating away at the vital organs of our own democracies—our norms, our rule of law, even our electoral processes. Fighting back is essential to the defense of freedom.
